This page will discuss how to connect to NetFree for those who have access to an internet service provider that supports NetFree. If you don't, click here for instructions. For a list of service providers that support NetFree click here.

You can join NetFree in 3 basic steps.

  1. Connecting to a service provider that supports NetFree
  2. Opening an account with NetFree
  3. Installing the security certificate

Connecting to a service provider

Use of the internet is done through an internet service provider, which is a company that connects you to the world wide web. Since NetFree is a a filter at the ISP level, it is first necessary to be connected to an ISP that supports NetFree. This can be done by getting in touch with a service provider that supports NetFree. There are two types of connections that currently support NetFree, wired connection and mobile connection.

See expanded entry: Suppliers and prices. (see also: Netstick rental with a Sim of NetFree, Buying a Netstick).

Opening an account with NetFree

In order to receive NetFree's wide range of services and enjoy professional support, you must open a user account in the NetFree system. When you start browsing you will be automatically redirected to open a NetFree account. The account name is your phone number. To verify that the number is indeed yours, the system will authenticate your number, during which you will receive a call and will be asked to enter the number that will appear on your caller ID. (For users outside Israel, just put in the final numbers after the zeros.)

There is no connection between the user name and password you received from the internet service provider and the user account of NetFree. NetFree's user account is solely based on a phone number, and can be moved from one connection to another if necessary.

Installing the security certificate

Once you are connected to NetFree, the system will automaticly request you to download and install the security certificate.

Installing the security certificate is necassary for filtering secure sites. You can read more about this in Security certificate, and in the NetFree's Privacy policy

Click Download Software to install the NetFree certificate.

Start the program and click Yes. Click Next.

To continue installation you must agree (type "I agree") and accept the terms. Confirm the conditions and click Install.

Congratulations!! you are now ready to use the high-quality, filtered web of NetFree.

Please note, You still need to update a payment method to NetFree on the payment page in your NetFree account you opened, for details see here.

Additional suggested steps

Block non-NetFree internet access

In order to ensure that the computer does not connect to another Internet provider without filtering, you can use the WiFree Software, which blocks the possibility of connecting to non-filtered networks or servers. This is especially needed for laptops that can connect to non-filtered wireless networks, and for desktop computers that are using a VPN. It is also a good thing to have as a second guard, in case something goes wrong with the NetFree connection.

If you have joined a Community Supervision you may be required to install the software and you will not be able to browse without it (depending on the community settings).

Personal filter settings

At this point it is suggested to set up your filter settings. There are 2 types of filtering settings, you can choose from them according to your needs or according to your community regulations.

  1. Personal Filter Settings. You can define which content you are interested in and which not. You can set everything closed except for what you want to open, or vice versa. You can also set a separate password for these settings.
  2. Community Supervision, who will watch over your account. Once you've chosen a community, you may not leave it without community permission. There is also a Gmail only community. Leaving this community comes with a 30 NIS mandatory donation to NetFree.
