Background: Google's various services (Gmail, Google Chat, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Photos) use shared servers and URLs to store images. Some of these services (such as images in Gmail and in a private Google Drive) contain entirely personal content and cannot be accessed unless you are signed in to the specific Google account where the images are stored. Therefore, in principle, these images can be displayed without filtering.

Other services (such as Google Chat images) are used, at least in part, for public content that is often shared with many users, and the images can frequently be accessed directly via their URL even without being signed in to the specific Google account. Therefore, these images cannot be displayed without filtering.

For this reason, images are handled differently, as follows:

  • Google Chat.png Google Chat: Images are displayed without filtering. Uploaded files (such as audio, video, PDF files, etc.) can be downloaded but cannot be viewed directly.
  • Google Docs Offline (with the Chrome extension): Sometimes images that have been sent for review do not reload after the review is completed and continue to appear as "Sent for review." This happens because Offline mode caches the images from the initial load.

To refresh the cached images, disable Offline mode and then enable it again. This forces the images to be reloaded after review.
Open the Google Docs home page, then select **Settings** → **Offline**, disable the option, and then enable it again.

Please note! In some cases, the actual behavior of the filtering system for images on these services may differ from what is described above due to changes made by Google or development issues.

  1. Some images in promotional emails or emails from mailing lists may not be stored on Google's servers. Those images will be sent for review regardless of your personal filtering settings.
