NetFree’s requirement is that every public group must have its own unique domain.
Below are examples of common platforms for operating public groups on a unique domain:
Platforms for Building Advanced Forums
There are 4 common platforms for building advanced forums, including many plugins to extend functionality:
- NodeBB – Open-source software, popular in new forums. Requires knowledge in Linux server maintenance, or payment for hosting services – there is an official service starting at $20 per month. Alternatively, you can turn to professionals to receive hosting and support with custom developments if needed, and so on.
- Examples of NodeBB forums: פורום תחומים, מתמחים טופ, רכבים זה לזה, ידיים טובות.
- XenForo – Starts at $54 per month and up.
- Examples of XenForo forums: פורום לתורה, פורום אוצר התורה, פורום מורשת מרן, פורום כותל המזרח.
- Free Flarum – Based on the open-source software Flarum. Allows creating a forum for free without needing to manage a server, though some technical sense is still required to navigate the forum’s many settings.
- Limited to 1,000 registered users, 50 simultaneous users on the site, and 1GB of file uploads – full restrictions.
- You can install the Flarum software itself on your own server and manage it, and then there are no limits.
- Quite popular worldwide, but no forum in Israel is known to use Flarum.
- phpBB – One of the oldest open-source forum platforms. It is completely free and supported by a large community. Requires hosting on your own server and some technical knowledge for installation and maintenance. Thousands of extensions and themes are available to expand functionality and customize design.
Platforms for Building Updateable Channels
TheChannel – Open-source software built specifically by NetFree[1] as a replacement for update channels. Requires knowledge in server maintenance, etc.
